“Building a Home where Unity, Strength and Resilience Live” – FN Group Home Gathering – November 30 & December 1, 2021

On November 30th and December 1st, 2021, SFNFCI proudly hosted a First Nations Group Home Gathering: “Building a Home where Unity, Strength and Resilience Live” at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, SK.  SFNFCI was very excited that we were able to meet in person while adhering to SHA guidelines that kept everyone’s safety and health in mind. Prairieland Park served as an excellent venue to host the group home gathering with incredible space, food, and service.

We had a total of 52 attendees. Participants attended from various group homes that included Eagles Nest Youth Ranch, Onion Lake First Nation, Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, Prince Albert Grand Council, Yorkton Tribal Council, QBOW CFS, Saskatoon Tribal Council, Touchwood CFS, Sturgeon Lake CFS, Waterhen Lake First Nation, Montreal Lake CFA, Ranch Ehrlo Society, and Mistahi Sipiy CFS. Elders Judy Pelly and Wally Awasis joined us for the group home gathering. Elders Judy and Wally added so much value to the gathering as they were able to support and share their knowledge and wisdom during the two days.

The group home gathering provided a variety of guest speakers that shared knowledge relevant to the theme over the two-day period.

Day one of the gathering included a presentation from Dr. Cassandra Phillips. Cassandra presented “Managing Child Behavior” and the session helped participants to understand the functions of behavior so that they know what approach to take when it comes to intervention More information about Cassandra Phillips and the services provided can be found at https://behaviourspecialistsaskatoon.ca/.  We also had a presentation from the Comeback Society, which is comprised of sisters, Lexi Obey and Alicia Morin, https://thecomebacksociety.com/.  They presented on supporting Indigenous individuals in finding their voice through programs seeded from cultural teachings and revitalization. Day one wrapped up with all participants sharing their construction skills and in line with the theme of “Building a Home where Unity, Strength and Resilience Live” built gingerbread houses.  The creativity in the room was undeniable as the houses were amazing!
