YTC Womens Safe Haven COVID-19 Response

SFNFCI is connecting with those we work with to hear about the kind of work being done in our First Nation communities during COVID-19.  Our intention is to share the stories in a series of blogs on the SFNFCI website.

On April 21st 2020, I spoke with Nola Mahingen, Director of Yorkton Tribal Council Womens Safe Haven Shelter. The shelter has seen new connections being made amid the COVID-19 pandemic. They are working collectively with health with the 6 bands: Keeseekoose First Nation, Cote First Nation, Keys First Nation, Zagime First Nation, Kahkewistahaw First Nation, and Ocean Man First Nation, to help provide services and supports to women and children. They have seen a stronger connection made with Emergency Response Planning Coordinator in ways to support the shelter.

The shelter has increased their cleaning and disinfecting procedures, as well as created new questioning protocols for those coming into shelter, in order to protect staff and current shelter residence. Although some staff are on work from home, those who are still working in the shelter are displaying physical distancing practices and encouraging residents to do the same. To try and stay connected Shelter staff received 3 new laptops, and are continuously emailing one another, having conference calls and using basic messenger to stay in touch.

YTC Womens Safe Haven Shelter Director Nola, commends the staff who are continuing to work, and getting the job done so that women and children still have a safe place to go.

If you would like more information on what is happening with YTC Womens Safe Haven please contact Nola Mahingen at nola.mahingen@ytai.org
